Hike in Labin - Sentonina Trail
The Magic of Labin & Rabac: Hiking the Sentonina and Divine Spring Trails
This hike is a combined adventure along the Sentonina Trail and the Divine Spring Trail, linking the hilltown of Labin with the coastal jewel of Rabac. It´s a perfect blend of nature, history, legend, and seaside relaxation.
Trail Overview
Location & Route: The journey begins in the medieval Old Town of Labin, descends via the lush Sentonina Trail through forested groves and over streams, and continues via the Divine Spring Trail up past waterfalls, eventually bringing you back into Labin.
General Information
Length & Duration: Altogether, the two trails cover about 5–5.5 km, with a typical combined hike taking 2 to 3 hours, depending on pace and stops.
Difficulty: Rated as moderately demanding — there is some elevation gain (approximately 294 m on the Divine Spring Trail) — but it’s quite manageable for most hikers in good condition.
Best Time to Visit: Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal, when Mediterranean vegetation is lush, and water in the streams and waterfalls is at its fullest.
A Natural Wonderland
The Sentonina Trail (Istra trails 804) is named after the ancient Liburnian goddess Sentona, the protector of travelers. Along the trail, you will cross seven charming wooden bridges over babbling brooks and rapids, immersing yourself in a woodland full of laurel and maritime pine.
The Pećina (Cave) stream flows over winding limestone formations, forming waterfalls that cascade into a serene turquoise lake. Near the biggest waterfall, you'll find the ruins of an old mill, once powered by the spring.
A hidden highlight: the Negri Cave, where a spring wells up from the rock — local legend even speaks of a giant once dwelling there.
Cultural & Historical Richness
Just off the trail, you can see the remains of the Romanesque Church of St. Hadrian, dating to the 12th–13th century.
The Divine Spring Trail (Istra trails 803) retraces spring water sources that were once vital to Labin’s residents: the Šćurak spring in Podvinje was the main city spring, surrounded by gardens where women carried water in heavy traditional buckets (‘brente’).
In Labin’s old town (the hike’s start and finish), you’ll pass baroque palaces, galleries & churches.
The hills and dry stone walls you cross are part of a protected landscape, and the engineering of old spring networks speaks to centuries of local craftsmanship.
Seaside Relaxation & Coastal Charm
At the trail’s lower point, you reach Rabac, known as the “Pearl of Kvarner Bay” for its pebble beaches and crystal-clear waters.
After your hike, enjoy a well-deserved coffee break by the beach — Rabac’s promenade and coves offer charming cafés and places to rest and soak in the sea breeze.
You can also swim in Maslinica Bay, making this hike a perfect blend of hiking and coastal leisure.
Local Food & Refreshments
For lunch or dinner in Rabac, there is a variety of seaside restaurants — from casual seafood taverns to more refined dining, perfect for recharging after your walk.
Back in Labin, you can explore the old town’s eateries or enjoy a glass of local Istrian wine in a historic tavern perched above the rooftops.
