Korita hike Istria
A hidden gem in Istria’s highlands
Why is the Korita hike special
The Korita hike is a truly unique experience, appealing to both nature enthusiasts and history lovers. The trail meanders through a pristine landscape, home to diverse flora and fauna. Towering beech and oak trees create a refreshing canopy, making the hike enjoyable even on warmer days. The air is crisp, filled with the scent of wild herbs and pine, offering a true escape into nature.
One of the defining features of this hike is the breathtaking panoramic views. As a trail ascends, hikers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of Istria’s rolling hills and dense woodlands. Whether you're hiking in the soft golden light of the morning or witnessing the fiery hues of an Istrian sunset, the scenery never fails to impress.
The historical and cultural significance of Korita spring
At the heart of the hike lies Korita, a series of wooden basins that have been naturally carved by water over the centuries. The spring was once a vital water source for the local people and their livestock, particularly in the passt when the access to clean water was scarce. Villagers from the surrounding areas would gather here to collect fresh drinking water, wash clothes and allow their animals to drink the basins.
Beyond its practical importance, the spring served as a social hub where people exchanged news, strengthened community ties and upheld traditions passed down through the generations. Today, the preserved wooden basins stand as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity f those who relied on them, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has largely disappeared but remains deeply woven into Istria’s history.
A hike for all
The Korita hike is suitable for hikers of various skill levels, making it an excellent choice for families, casual walkers and seasoned adventurers alike. The well-marked trail ensures a safe and enjoyable experience and its moderate difficulty allows for a leisurely exploration of the area’s natural and cultural wonders.
Whether you seek solitude in nature, an enriching historical journey, or simply a picturesque hike, the Korita hike is a must-visit destination in Istria. Lace up you hiking boots and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of this hidden gem.
Getting there from Kompanj
Reaching Brgudac, the starting point of Korita hike, is quick, scenic and straightforward from Mountain Lodge Istria. The drive takes about 30-35 minutes and winds through some of the most picturesque parts of inland Istria:
1. From Kompanj head north towards Račja vas and Laninšče, following the local road through the peaceful highlands of Ćićarija.
2. Continue past Laninšće, staying on the same road until you reach the small mountain village of Brgudac.
3. As you enter Brgudac, follow the local signs to the Korita trailhead. Parking is at the entrance to the village.
The lesser-known route offers a more authentic experience than the main highways, passing through quiet villages and beautiful forested landscapes with minimal trafic.
