Biking in Istria / Kompanj

Our route tips for road cyclists and mountain bikers

The Mountain Lodge Istria offers the ideal starting point for many great bike tours, far from the well-known cycling destinations. With little traffic and a network of many small roads around Kompanj, there are numerous possibilities for diverse routes – however, all routes have one thing in common: a few elevation gains are always to be tackled.

Road Bike Route 1 - Warmup

For the warm-up, it’s recommended to start from Kompanj heading east. The route passes through Lanišće, Trstenik, and on the return, you will pass by Slum and Gornja Nugla. Over the 37 km through small villages, you'll encounter 760 meters of elevation gain.

Road Bike Route 2 - Butoniga

Starting from Kompanj, head south towards Lake Butoniga, where you’ll be greeted by landscapes reminiscent of Tuscany. The climbs near Vrh are particularly challenging, but the stunning view over Lake Butoniga makes it worthwhile. The route takes you from Kompanj to Brnobići and Krušvari, along the ridge to Juradi. The return journey passes through Vrh, Sveti Donat, and Buzet, back to Kompanj. Over 46 km, you’ll tackle approximately 1,100 meters of elevation gain.

Road Bike Route 3 – Učka

The queen stage leads over Mount Učka to Ičići. From there, the route continues along the sea heading south to Plomin. The loop then returns inland via Jesenovik back to Kompanj. This demanding route covers 105 km and 1,800 meters of elevation gain. For particularly ambitious cyclists, there’s an optional detour from the main road to the summit of Vojak. The highest peak in Istria offers a fantastic view over the entire peninsula. However, an additional 400 meters of elevation gain is required to reach the summit.

Mountain Biking in Istria / Croatia

The trail network is diverse and very varied. The highest mountain is Učka, which can be reached via an old Roman road. But even on shorter tours around Kompanj, you'll experience Istria in a unique way. On small asphalt roads, you'll be riding almost alone, as there is hardly any traffic. There are also many opportunities for single-trail bikers in the Istrian hinterland.

We are still gathering information on this and appreciate your help!
