Are you looking for the best climbing crags in Croatia? Then you are at the right place. We present you some of our favorite sport climbing areas in Croatia/Istria. The perfect rock quality and the Croatian flair make every climber's heart beat faster. The rock in all described climbing areas is nicely featured mediterranean limestone.
Our climbers base "Mountain Lodge Istria" is located in the small village of Kompanj, directly at the foot of the walls of Kompanj. Perfect for a long weekend or a longer climbing vacation in Croatia.
The best season for climbing in Istria
The best season for climbing in Istria is fall, winter and spring. But also the summer is still good for climbing in Croatia, once you hit the right spots in the shade. The pleasant warm temperatures attract many climbers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland over the winter months to the south. In summer it is almost too hot for climbing very difficult routes, but if you lower your expectations and go for an early start, you will have fun in the summer. You can always enjoy swimming on the beach by the sea.
For the south exposed climbing crags we highly recommend to come in October - May. In November, December, January and February is prime season, best grip and fresh air.
Climbing in Kompanj - Istria
The walls in Kompanj Istria are the largest and one of the most beautiful climbing crags in Istria. A striking, 1.5 kilometer long wall features over 130 sport routes from 5a - 8c+ . What makes the place so special is the exposure. Due to the south-facing walls, you ca enjoy sun almost all day long and experience perfect grip during the winter season. We recommend climbing in Kompanj from September until April. All year around you get a fantastic view over the mountains of Istria.
The Mountain Lodge Istria is located in the immediate vicinity of the Kompanj climbing area and is perfect as a climbing base. With only 15 minutes of approach, you are at the base of the walls and can therefore go climbing every day without wasting time on driving.
From strength-sapping tufa climbing, vertical face to slab climbing, the area offers everything in perfect limestone.
The general conditions of the protection is very good. Most of the routes have a length between 20m and 35m. Therefore we recommend you to bring a 70m rope.
